Wreck sends car into New Albany pond

Driver rescued by firefighter

NEW ALBANY — The driver of a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt was pulled from a pond by a New Chapel firefighter following an accident in front of Mercy Providence Retirement Home, 4915 Charlestown Road, Wednesday afternoon.

Chad Lovan, 38, Clarksville, suffered some sort of medical emergency while driving southbound on Charlestown Road. Lovan lost control of the car, which left the roadway, and landed in the small pond. New Chapel firefighters were already at Providence on an unrelated call and heard the accident. Maj. Donovan Harrod of New Chapel jumped into the pond and pulled Lovan from the submerged vehicle.

Officer Tim Blackford of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department was at the Goodwill store, near Providence, and arrived at the scene two minutes after the accident, which occurred at 3:44 p.m. Lovan was taken to Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services and his condition was unknown as of press time.

“All the parts just happened to fall into place,” said Maj. Jeff Topping with the sheriff’s department. “The fire department happened to be there and our officer was there in two minutes.”

A member of the Indiana State Police dive team helped secure the vehicle in order for the wrecker to pull it out of the water.
