Clarksville man pleads guilty to insurance fraud

Collected more than $10,000 in unemployment benefits while working

CLARKSVILLE — A Clarksville man has pled guilty to a fraud charge after being convicted of collecting more than $10,000 in unemployment benefits while working full-time.

David J. Coons, 35, pled guilty last week in Clark County Circuit Court to unemployment insurance fraud, a class C felony, according to a news release from the Department of Workforce Development [DWD].

DWD began its investigation after it received notice from Coons’ employer indicating he was working full-time while collecting benefits, the release stated. Using agency records and the information from Coons’ employer, DWD was able to verify Coons’ was, in fact, working full-time and collecting benefits.

“Mr. Coons’ case is a great example of how we rely on businesses to help us protect Hoosier tax dollars and punish those who take advantage of the system,” said Scott B. Sanders, DWD’s commissioner. “We definitely appreciate their diligence in helping protect the integrity of the system.

Coons was sentenced to 3 1/2 years’ probation, and will serve the time in prison if he violates the terms of his probation, according to the release. He was also ordered to repay DWD $10,235 for the benefits he fraudulently collected.

Indiana residents can help combat unemployment insurance fraud and abuse by reporting it online at www.in.gov/dwd/fraud. Such efforts will help ensure tax dollars are spent wisely and unemployment insurance benefits are only paid to people who are eligible to receive them, the release stated.  Reporting fraud can be done anonymously through the website.
