Police search for man they believe sexually assaulted child

Public asked to help in search

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help in locating a man believed to have sexually assaulted a girl this morning after forcing her into a van.

Clark County Sheriff’s Detective Racheal Lee said the child was walking to her bus stop about 7 a.m. when the man pulled her into a van and committed the sexual assault. The child is a Greater Clark County Schools student, but her age is not being disclosed to protect her privacy. Lee said the incident took place in a subdivision near the intersection of Utica-Sellersburg Road and a High Meadows Drive in Clark County.

Lee said the man is believed to have released the child in the same spot he had forced her into the van, without moving the vehicle during the alleged crime. The man was the only occupant of the van.

The child was walking alone when she was approached by the man and was closer to her home than the bus stop, Lee said. She said the girl appears to be OK, and was taken to New Albany for a forensic-physical examination after the incident.

The suspect is described as white man approximately 6-feet 2-inches tall in his 40s with blond-gray hair and a goatee. He was seen wearing blue jeans and a blue-hooded shirt.

He was driving an older model white panel van without rear-passenger windows.

If you have any information about the incident or the man’s whereabouts, call the Clark County Sheriff’s Office at 812-283-4471.
