Update: Witness describes events of fatal accident on Clark Memorial Bridge

Car left dangling off bridge after breaking through guardrail

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Clark Memorial Bridge will be shut down for at least two hours after a single-vehicle, fatal car accident.

Louisville Metro Police Department Spokesman Dwight Mitchell said a female, believed to be in her mid-20s, was heading southbound from Jeffersonville into Louisville when she swerved into the northbound lanes of traffic, back into the southbound lanes before crashing into a support beam on the bridge. It is not believed that the driver was wearing a seatbelt and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The BMW she was driving came to rest, partially on the sidewalk, after it broke through the bridge railing with the rear tire hanging over the Ohio River.

“All factors are still in play at this point, we are still in the very early stages of the investigation,” Mitchell said.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials were also on the scene inspecting the bridge for structural damage. River traffic had also been restricted in the area below where the vehicle crashed through he guardrail.

Russell P. Roberts, an eyewitness to the accident who was walking across the bridge when the crash occurred, said the vehicle was going about 65 mph across the bridge. The speed limit on the bridge is 35 mph.

Roberts said after the car swerved from the southbound lane into the northbound lane, it hopped the curb and hit the support beam. He said the driver did not hit the brakes before crashing into the bridge.
