Fire destroys New Albany apartment building

No one injured in blaze

NEW ALBANY — A fire destroyed a New Albany apartment building Wednesday evening.

The fire broke out around 8:30 p.m. in a two-story building at the corner of Oak and Silver streets. The building was split into three apartments with an attached garage.

It took New Albany firefighters around 45 minutes to contain the fire. They were still putting out hot spots at 10 p.m. There were no injuries.

New Albany Fire Department Deputy Chief Brian Gadd said when firefighters arrived there was heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure, which he said is likely a total loss. A house next door on Oak Street also sustained damage.

Gadd said the fire is under investigation and did not want to speculate where it may have started. A nearby telephone pole also caught fire which burned through electrical wires.

Rhonda Ferber lives across Oak Street from the apartment building and said there is always something going on at the complex.

“My first thought when I saw flames billow up was that a drug lab exploded,” she said. “The police are always over there. That building has been a problem for years.”

Ferber was afraid the building was going to explode.

“I am so grateful,” she said. “These firefighters are my heroes.”
