40 & 8 donates 9/11 memorial flag to New Albany Fire Department

NEW ALBANY — Every day, firefighters and public safety workers go to their jobs not knowing if they will return home when the day is through.

It’s become somewhat of a trite way of looking at the service of the men and women who spend their careers protecting others, but that doesn’t make it any less true.

The events of Sept. 11, 2001, also have become ingrained in American culture, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important to remember what happened that day.

On Friday, members of the Floyd County chapter of the 40 & 8 Club donated a framed memorial flag to the New Albany Fire Department that contains a list of the names of all the public safety workers who died on 9/11.

“Our fire department does a great job and we wanted them to have it,” said club member Dan Scott.

The 40 & 8 also plans on giving a similar flag to the New Albany Police Department.

The flag donated on Friday will be showcased inside the NAFD headquarters off Spring Street as part of the 9/11 memorial the department launched there a few years ago.

“The 40 & 8 is a great club and organization for the community,” New Albany Fire Chief Matt Juliot said. “This will be a great addition to our memorial.”

The 40 & 8 is located at 221 Albany St. in New Albany, and has almost 200 active members. The origin of the national club dates back to 1920 and was originally tied to the American Legion.

It is a veterans’ club that conducts charitable works and provides entertainment to its members. Last year, the Floyd County chapter provided three $500 scholarships to local nursing students at Indiana University Southeast.

The club has several fundraisers, including a breakfast buffet the first Saturday of each month for a cost of $6. The organization is also preparing for its annual fall steak dinner fundraiser, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 30 and is $8 per person.
