Marijuana arrest in Jeffersonville nets $29K in cash

Man’s home was under surveillance

JEFFERSONVILLE — The surveillance of a home by Jeffersonville police’s drug investigation unit last week led to a traffic stop and the seizure of four ounces of marijuana and $29,000 in cash.

Jerod Childs, 43, Jeffersonville, who had been suspected of drug trafficking, has been preliminarily charged with dealing in marijuana, possession of marijuana, maintaining a common nuisance and reckless possession of marijuana.

According to a police report, a JPD drug investigator was conducting surveillance at Childs’ Middle Road home on Nov. 6 and watched him leave the residence and get into a Honda Accord registered in his name.

Childs then drove the car west on Middle Road, where the drug investigator began following the vehicle. After the investigator noticed Childs was traveling 7 mph over the roadway’s 35 mph speed limit, he contacted a patrol officer who made the traffic stop. During the time of the stop near Eighth Street and Ewing Lane, Childs was still traveling 42 mph in a 25 mph school zone.

The drug investigator parked nearby and observed the traffic stop, according to the report.

The officer found Childs to have the odor of alcohol on his breath and several beers in the back seat of the vehicle, but he was not found to be intoxicated. Childs consented to have the car being searched, at which time two plastic bags containing marijuana and a digital scale were located.

After the traffic stop, a search warrant was obtained and drug officers searched Childs’ home. Police reported a total of nearly four ounces of marijuana and $29,000 cash was located in Childs’ vehicle and residence.

According to online Clark County court records, Childs does not have any prior drug arrests.

The date of his court appearance had not been updated online before press time.
