Chicago murder suspect arrested in Jeffersonville

He is suspected of causing several deaths

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jeffersonville police have arrested a suspect in a 1999 murder in Chicago.

Kevin Mitchell, 46, was arrested at his place of employment in Jeffersonville as JPD officers are assisting law enforcement from Cook County, Ill., according to a JPD press release.

According to the arrest warrant information, Mitchell was one of several subjects involved in the kidnapping, attempted ransom and murder of a man in Chicago in 1999. According to information from the Cook County authorities, all the other parties involved in the murder have been arrested.

Mitchell is wanted for other serious crimes, according to a 2011 article in the Daily Herald, a newspaper in suburban Chicago.

Chicago-area prosecutors say Mitchell and Raymond Winters and a third gang member murdered 15-year-old Frederick Nolan on June 9, 1995, in Chicago. Prosecutors said a gun used in the killing has been forensically tied to other crimes involving Winters and Mitchell, according to the article. A man who was convicted in the slaying also identified Winters as the shooter, prosecutors said. Nolan, who was wanted on murder charges at his time of death, was shot three times in the head, with one shot close to his left eye.

Also, on Jan. 5, 1995, the article notes that Winters, Mitchell and a third man are accused of killed Kimberly Harrison in Chicago to prevent her from testifying as a witness to the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy. Prosecutors said Harrison was grabbed while walking in an alley, handcuffed and dragged into an abandoned garage, where she was shot twice in the chest and head.
