Man from Jeffersonville golf-cart accident pleads not guilty

Trial date set for June 5

JEFFERSONVILLE —

A Jeffersonville man made his first appearance in court on Tuesday since being charged in a fatal accident that claimed the life of his friend on April 20.

Matthew J. Myers, 33, appeared in Clark County Circuit Court No. 3 and pled not guity to charges he faces stemming from the fatal golf cart crash in downtown Jeffersonville last month, according to news-gathering partner WLKY-TV. A trial date was set for July 11. Myers will appear in court for his next hearing June 5, WLKY reports.

Myers has been charged with operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of at least .15 causing death, a class B felony, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, a class C felony. If he is found guilty of both charges, Myers could face up to 28 years in prison and $20,000 in fines.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case, Jeffersonville Police Department officers discovered Chad Anderson, 32, of Jeffersonville lying on the ground in the 200 block of Spring Street at about 12:30 a.m., hours before the annual Thunder Over Louisville air show and fireworks display. Paramedics transported Anderson to University of Louisville Hospital, where he later died.

It is believed Anderson was thrown from the six-passenger EZ-GO golf cart he and Myers were riding in after the cart took a “hard turn.” But, according to the probable cause affidavit, it is unclear who was driving the cart at the time of the accident. Police say at different points in their interviews with Myers, he both admitted and denied he was the driver at the time of the accident.

Police say Myers also admitted to drinking at the Third Base Tavern before the accident and police found beer in the golf cart. Myers registered a .255 blood-alcohol content when given a portable breath test, according to the affidavit.

When reached for comment on Tuesday, Myers’ attorney David Mosley said he had no comment on the case at this time.
