Hammer-wielding robber jailed after attempt at Clarksville mall

CPD makes arrest of Green Tree Mall thief

CLARKSVILLE — A Clarksville man was arrested after stealing from a kiosk in Green Tree Mall and threatening to kill the clerk with a hammer, police reported.

Robert Earl Copas Jr., 27, of 437 Windemere Road, was at the retailer in the afternoon of Feb. 22 trying on jewelry.

Security personnel approached Copas and told him he needed to get his hand checked because he was getting blood on a showcase counter.

Clarksville police reported that Copas was wearing one of the store’s necklaces at the time, and that he attempted to leave the store with the merchandise as he went to receive treatment to his hand.

The store clerk told Copas he was still wearing the necklace, and he handed it over to her.

Copas went and had his hand bandaged then returned to the store.

He put the same necklace around his neck, and told the clerk he wanted to look at another.

“While she retrieved that necklace, Copas took off from the store in an attempt to steal the items,” police reported.

The clerk chased after him in attempt to get the necklace back, and “ ... at this time, he pulled out a hammer, swung it at her and told her to ‘Get the [expletive] back or I’ll kill you,’” according to the police report.

When police arrived, the store clerk gave the officer Copas’ physical description. He was located on Lewis and Clark Parkway at Eastern Boulevard by another officer.

Copas was taken back to the mall, and the clerk made a positive identification. The necklace was found around his neck with the price tag attached. The merchandise was returned to the store.

Copas admitted to police he had been in possession of a hammer, which he said he threw down in the parking lot.

Copas was charged in Clark County Circuit Court No. 1 with robbery, a class C felony.

He appeared for an initial hearing Tuesday. A pretrial conference was scheduled for April 18.
