Body found in Lapping Park

CLARKSVILLE — Though police are awaiting confirmation on the identity of a body found in Lapping Park on Saturday, the body is believed to belong to a man who went missing Dec. 31, 2012.

The body was found about 6 p.m. by an individual collecting golf balls in a wooded area of the park. The body has not yet been positively identified, said Clarksville Police Chief Mark Palmer.

“We’re waiting on the coroner’s report to come back in reference to medical confirmation,” Palmer said.

Palmer said the body is that of an adult white male, but because of decomposition, details like age and height could not immediately be determined.

The body was in possession of personal effects believed to belong to John Phillip Stensrud, 46, who went missing from the area on New Year’s Eve. He was last seen leaving the home of his brother, Paul Stensrud. John Stensrud was considered a danger to himself due to emotional and psychiatric problems.

“Right now, what I know is only what the detective has told me. A lot of similarities fit the description of what he left with,” Paul Stensrud said Sunday. “My understanding is also that they’ve got a social security card of his. So that tells me at least on that side that he’s been located.”

Paul Stensrud said his brother has a metal plate in his head, which should hasten the process of confirming the body’s identity.

“They can simply take a look at that plate, call ... the hospital, and there’s numbers on that plate that would identify who he is,” Paul Stensrud said.
