Man found dead by firefighters in Henryville

Fire destroys home; dogs saved

HENRYVILLE — A 73-year-old Henryville man was found dead after firefighters responded to his burning home Monday morning.

Arnold Ray Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene, Clark County Coroner Terry Conway said.

The fire started about 9:45 a.m. in his home at 409 Country Lake Road, Monroe Township Fire Department Chief Mark Furnish said. He added that since the fire involves a fatality, the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Clark County Sheriff’s Department have picked up the fire investigation. He said early Monday evening that the cause of the fire and where it originated in the home remained undetermined.

When neighbors alerted authorities of the fire, the home was already well involved in flames, Furnish said. He said firefighters could only fight the fire in a defensive mode upon their arrival. Furnish said it was believed Roberts was in the home during the fire because his vehicle was parked in the driveway.

He was found laying on the floor in the two-story home, Furnish said.

Roberts was known to have several dogs, and all of the dogs are believed to have survived.

Furnish said after Roberts was found, firefighters heard several dogs that has sought refuge in the home’s floorboards. The floors were torn up and five or six dogs were found safe by firefighters.

Furnish said the home was an old farm house about 75 years old. Roberts is believed to have been the only person living in the home.

Officials said it is unclear if Roberts died before the fire began or if he succumbed to injuries resulting from the blaze.

The case remains under investigation. Check back to newsandtribune.com and read upcoming edtions for more information.
