Repeat drug offender in court

Man faces two felonies following heroin transaction

JEFFERSONVILLE — A Louisville man charged with selling heroin in Clarksville appeared in a Clark County court Wednesday for his initial hearing.

Clarksville police reported Gregory Sawyers, 33, was seen by officers making the drug deal Feb. 7 in the parking lot of Circle K on Eastern Boulevard near Interstate 65. Police recovered 1.3 grams of heroin after his arrest.

Sawyers was represented by attorney Bill Gray during the proceeding, during which presiding Judge Jerry Jacobi entered a not guilty plea on Sawyers’ behalf.

Sawyers has been charged with dealing of a narcotic drug, a class A felony, possession of a narcotic drug, a class B felony, and habitual substance offender.

The heroin transaction took place within 1,000 feet of St. Anthony Elementary School. The proximity to the school resulted in an enhancement of the felony charges.

The habitual charge was issued on a basis of previous, unrelated drug convictions.

According to the Office of the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office, in 2001, Sawyers was convicted of marijuana possession, and in 2005 he was convicted of trafficking in a controlled substance. The convictions occurred in Kentucky courts, Gray said.

Following his arrest, Sawyers was being held under a $25,000 full-cash bond.

During the hearing, Gray requested the bond be modified to $25,000 court-cash, which would allow him to be released with a $2,500 bond payment. Gray and Clark County Deputy Prosecutor Matthew Lemme approached the bench to discuss the bond modification with Jacobi.

Following the brief conversation, Jacobi set Sawyers’ bond at $50,000 court-cash.

“I thought the standard bond, being $25,000 court cash, was appropriate,” Gray said after the proceeding.

Sawyers is scheduled to return to the court March 25 for a pretrial hearing.

According to Jefferson County court officials, Sawyers has been booked into Louisville Corrections 18 times since 1997.
