Salem mom arrested in infant’s death

Boyfriend has also been charged

— A 23-year-old Salem woman was arrested Friday following the investigation of her 8-month-old son’s death last Sunday.

Casey Crain, of Ridgeview Drive, has been preliminarily charged by the Indiana State Police with neglect of a dependent, a class A felony.

ISP reported Crain had found her child, Leelan Crain, unresponsive about 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, while he was taking a nap.

Crain and her live-in boyfriend, Jamie James Lykins, 24, took the child to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Salem.

At the hospital, the child was transported to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville by air ambulance.

The following morning, at approximately 1:40 a.m., the child was pronounced dead.

Preliminary results of an autopsy conducted at the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office later in the morning determined the infant’s cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head.

Lykins was arrested by ISP and Salem police Monday afternoon at a convenience store on Ind. 56 in Salem.

His arrest came after detectives were able to gather enough evidence from interviews, crime scene investigators and the autopsy’s results, ISP reported.

Lykins has been charged in Washington County Circuit Court with neglect of a dependent resulting in death and battery causing death, both class A felonies. Each of the charges reflect a victim under the age of 14 and a defendant at least 18 years old.

ISP reported that the official and final determination of the cause of death will not be made until the autopsy results are complete, which typically takes up to six weeks. This investigation is continuing.

Crain and Lykins were each booked into the Washington County Jail following their arrests.

Lykins remained in the facility Friday afternoon under a $180,00 full-cash bond. Crain is being held under a $40,000 full-cash bond.
