Ivy Tech expects more Kentucky students in future

By TARA HETTINGER

With tuition rates increasing across the board at colleges, administrators with Ivy Tech Community College, in Sellersburg, believe their lower costs will lure more and more to Indiana from Kentucky.

Ivy Tech participates in the reciprocity agreement along with Indiana University Southeast, University of Louisville and others. Last spring, Ivy Tech had 400 students come from Kentucky counties. This spring, that number was 443. Terry Nolot, vice chancellor for enrollment services, said he believes that number will continue to grow.

“We have the lowest tuition rate in the area and we’re only eight miles from downtown Louisville,” Nolot said. “[With tuition increases at schools] I think what we’ll see is that a lot more people will be looking at the cost. The more people who do that, the more that will give Ivy Tech Community College a good hard look.”

Ivy Tech’s tuition is less than a third of U of L’s at $95 per credit hour and $290 respectively. IUS is $172.80 per credit hour.

Nolot said the reciprocity agreement has helped the college to grow in some areas, but other areas have seen more students leave. However, he said it’s not all about the numbers.

“It’s about having more choices for people in the area,” he said. “It’s about what’s in the best interest for the community and the region.”
