Community Foundation of Southern Indiana announces 2009 Paul W. Ogle scholars

Thanks to a grant from the Paul W. Ogle Foundation Inc., the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana awarded scholarships to five students beginning college this fall.

The scholarships, worth $5,000 per year, are renewable for eight semesters if the recipient maintains a 2.85 grade point average. The scholarships can be used at any school of the student’s choosing.

The students who are being honored are:

• Hillary Thomas, a graduate of Jeffersonville High School

• Samuel Mires, a graduate of Floyd Central High School

• Veronica Cintron, a graduate of Clarksville High School

• Emily Morris, a graduate of Austin High School

• Bridgett Washnock, a graduate of Switzerland County High School



HOW STUDENTS WERE CHOSEN

The scholarship committee that selected the recipients is comprised of business and professional leaders in Southern Indiana. The applicant’s names are omitted as the applications are evaluated to prevent bias. The scholarship award is based on a combination of factors, including academic standing, student leadership, community involvement and extenuating circumstances.

The scholarship is named in honor of Paul Ogle, who lived in Clark County and was a native of Switzerland County. Prior to his death, Ogle had for many years been a major contributor to charitable activities in his hometown of Vevay and other charitable interests throughout the Southern Indiana area.

Ogle chose to establish this scholarship fund to reward young people for their academic efforts and to encourage them to further their education. The scholarship has helped fund more than 100 college educations since it was established in 1994.

“This award honors the legacy and tradition established by Paul Ogle, who deeply valued education,” said Melissa Harbeson, program officer for the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana. “This scholarship will not only ease the financial burden placed on the families of college-bound students but it will also encourage students to maintain their grades to continue to receive renewals of the scholarship. It is an incredibly generous award.”
