All hail the Hogwarts at New Albany High School

‘Harry Potter’-themed cabaret engages audience

NEW ALBANY — Whether audiences favor Ravenclaw, Gryffindor or they’re just Muggles, New Albany High School’s theater department has something in store for all of them.

“Hogwarts Cabaret,” a collection of songs, readings and poems set in a “Harry Potter” atmosphere, opens its one-night-only production on Thursday. The Halloween-themed vignettes are performed as the audience dines around the stage, but it may become a part of the show.

The show is what director Gina Cisto hopes becomes an annual fundraising gala. Cisto said their spring show, “Antigone,” is up for adjudication with the International Thespian Society. She said the proceeds from “Hogwarts Cabaret” would go toward that trip or others, such as a student trek to Chicago or New York.

But students in the production said aside from the purpose, the show helps immerse the audience in the atmosphere of Hogwarts Banquet Hall, staying true to the “Harry Potter” films and books.

“I think it provides a different experience than regular theater,” said Tara Smith, a junior in the production. “I think a lot of people expect to come in and watch, but I think getting them involved will give them more of a personal experience with the show.”

Dance numbers set to favorites from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and others could get audience members on stage. Smith said sometimes, someone in the seats is brought up to dance.

Dustin Behr, a junior, said he thinks it’s going to be fun for both the cast and people who come in to watch.

There’s going to be a lot of audience interaction and some nice dancing,” Behr said. “We pull out people in the audience and have them dance with us.”

The food is prepared by Charmaine Corrie’s Culinary Arts Classes. Tickets are $25, but additional donations are accepted. For more information on tickets, call 812-542-2290.
