'Little Shop of Horrors' wraps this weekend at NAHS

Show raises funds for theater summer festival trip

NEW ALBANY — Audrey’s not just a giant plant bent on taking over the world, she’s helping bring dreams to life for some New Albany High School students.

This weekend’s final run of “Little Shop of Horrors” will serve as a fundraiser to help the troupe get to the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska, this summer to perform “Antigone.”

The show is based on a Broadway musical which became a film. Seymour, a mild-mannered florist shop worker, falls in love with his co-worker, Audrey. He also takes care of a plant that feeds on blood.

Tara Smith, a junior who plays the role of one of the Urchins chorus group, said knowing each ticket sale brings them closer to the festival is special to her.

“It means a lot and for someone to come would mean they’re coming to help us fulfill our dreams,” Smith said.

Nick Johnson, a junior playing Seymour, said going to the festival will give him and other juniors the chance to audition for colleges and acting conservatories while seniors will compete for scholarships.

He also said he’s excited to have so many people support the program.

“Some people are only coming to help us raise money,” Johnson said. “We perform [Antigone] first at International. As soon as we get off the bus, we perform.”
