Highland Hills teacher earns ExCEL Award

NEW ALBANY — New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp. announced that Highland Hills Middle School teacher Dawn Bowling was recognized as District Teacher of the Year-Secondary and is an ExCEL Award winner.

She has been teaching for 21 years, currently instructing seventh-graders in math at Highland Hills.

Bowling was praised in a NA-FC news release for the positive attitude she imparts on her students.

“Dawn is the epitome of a team player. Her willingness to do whatever it takes for the team is what makes her a true leader,” said Highland Hills Principal Steven Griffin in the release. “She also has a knack for instilling confidence in students. Kiddos leave Dawn’s class with the attitude that they can accomplish anything.”

She was presented with the ExCEL Award this week at the school. The award recognizes and rewards the contributions of public schools and teachers have made to the development and well-being of young people and the community. This award recognizes public school teachers who exemplify teaching excellence using innovation, excitement and enthusiasm in their teaching methodology; who maintain meaningful personal relationships with their students as well as parents, colleagues, and community members; are role models of professionalism and citizenship; and are personally committed to continued professional development and enhancement.

“We are so excited to have one of our middle school teachers represent our district as the ExCEL Award recipient,” said Rhonda Mall, director of Middle Schools at NA-FC Schools. “Dawn has worked extremely hard in implementing the Five Easy Steps to a Balanced Math Program and has collaborated with many of our Highland Hills teachers on strategies,”
