New battle looms over Indiana teaching requirements

INDIANAPOLIS — Educators are again trying to water down proposals that would allow college graduates without training in education to teach in Indiana classrooms.

State schools superintendent Glenda Ritz opposes the changes, which were part of a package of changes proposed by previous superintendent Tony Bennett. The changes also reduced requirements for school superintendents and would allow people with no experience to teach fine arts by passing a test.

The Indianapolis Star reports Indiana University School of Education Dean Gerardo Gonzalez said during a forum Tuesday that the rules would allow anyone with a college degree to teach regardless of training.

The state Board of Education approved some of the changes in late 2012, but Ritz hasn’t implemented them. The board could vote again as soon as March.
