Floyd Central hosting invitational

FLOYDS KNOBS — The Floyd Central High School Highlander Marching Band and Emerald Guard will host the 23rd consecutive band invitational Saturday, Sept. 28, at Ron Weigleb Stadium.

Gates open at 4 p.m., and competition starts at 5:30 p.m. The invitational hosts many of Southern Indiana’s finest and most decorated marching bands. Floyd Central will also perform their 2013 show, “Currents” in exhibition.

The field of bands — with the exception of the Highlander Marching Band and Emerald Guard’s exhibition performance at 9 p.m. to cap off the day of competition — will be judged by six officials from around the nation with only one of the bands receiving the much coveted Sweepstakes Award and traveling trophy.

Floyd Central’s marching band has competed at the state finals in Indianapolis four consecutive years.

Marching bands are classified by school size, so bands compete in specific classes against bands with similar enrollment statistics, much like high school sports. Bands in Class A scheduled to compete include Corydon Central, Charlestown and Salem. Eastern, Southwestern and Henryville bands will compete in Class AA, while Crawford County, North Harrison and Paoli will compete in Class AAA.  Bands from Bloomington South, Meade County and Columbus North will compete in Class AAAA.

Concessions will be available throughout the day. All proceeds support and benefit the Highlander band. Tickets may be purchased at the gate for $5, while children 5 years of age and younger are admitted free.
