‘Oz!’ opens at New Washington High School tonight

NEW WASHINGTON —

A classic story with a jazzed-up score will blend old and new with the New Washington Drama Club’s production of “Oz!” opening tonight and running through Sunday.

Roberta Morgan, theater director, said while the show follows the plot of “The Wizard of Oz,” it adds several new songs and lots of dancing.

“That’s been the fun of it, the new songs and some really cool choreography for the high school,” Morgan said. “We’ve had a blast with that and incorporating some of the old stuff in there.”

She said while much of the score includes new songs, familiar tunes such as “Over the Rainbow” were added in. She said the show incorporates students from New Washington Elementary and the high school, bringing the cast and crew to more than 100 students.

Bailey Meenach, junior, plays Dorothy and also directs the elementary students. She said this show gives the schools a chance to show off their dancing skills.

“They’re really going to enjoy how we’ve incorporated new songs with old songs,” Meenach said. “New Washington isn’t known for its choreography, but we’ve really staged it and put our own different spin on things.”

Breann Hendrickson, a junior, plays the guard of the Emerald City gates. She said the audience will also play a part on the stage show.

“We get to interact with the little kids and sing and dance along, but it also interacts with the crowd,” Hendrickson said. “We sing to them and get their opinion in the play at one point, the witch asks what she should do with one of the characters and the audience has to respond.”

Morgan said she’s proud of the work her students have done on this show — the biggest one they’ve put on stage — and hopes audiences will enjoy it.

“It’s been a blast, the kids have put a lot of work into it,” Morgan said. “It’s the biggest production New Wash has ever put on. We had a real big one with ‘Bah, Humbug!’ last semester, but this one surpassed that.”
