Ex-Indiana schools chief faces ethics complaint

Tony Bennett under fire for campaign issue

INDIANAPOLIS — Former Indiana schools Superintendent Tony Bennett is defending his actions after a state ethics complaint accused him of using state resources for political purposes.

Bennett says he has “made every effort to be cognizant of and to follow state rules and guidelines for elected officials.”

Bennett says he looks forward to working with the state Ethics Commission and Inspector General David Thomas “to demonstrate proper adherence to state rules and guidelines.”

Thomas’ complaint filed with the Ethics Commission Thursday alleges Bennett improperly used state resources for political fundraising, to schedule campaign meetings and to conduct other political or personal activity. A hearing is scheduled for Jan. 9.

The move comes two months after The Associated Press reported Bennett kept campaign databases on state servers and ordered staff to do political work.
