NEW ALBANY —
Donna Dangler had every reason to smile. As a homeschool mother of three daughters, buying teaching supplies can be costly.
But the sale at St. Mary’s Catholic Academy in New Albany Thursday was like hitting the jackpot.
“Anytime I can get a hardback book for $1, I am all over it,” she said. “I have two stacks so far. It’s a blessing for us because we are a one income family.”
The sale, held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., attracted several teachers, homeschool parents and others who were looking for educational bargains. Paperback books were selling for a quarter, hardbacks were $1, large paperbacks were $2 and large spiral books were $3. School desks were being sold for $20 each and individual lockers were $10. There were also other items including board games, tapes and a few classroom toys. There were also small chalkboards and microscopes up for grabs.
The sale will continue today in the gymnasium at the top of the ramp at the back of the building. Payment in the form of cash or check only will be taken along with photo ID. All sales will be final.
St. Mary’s closed following its final day of school May 31 after 64 years at its current building at 420 E. Eighth St., New Albany. Last week other New Albany Deanery schools were invited to purchase books and equipment from the school, according to St. Mary’s Catholic Church officials. The building will now be used for church and other activities.
Heather Stocksdale, a second-grade teacher at Wilson Elementary, found out about the sale from her parents and quickly told a few of her co-workers. They managed to walk out of the gym Thursday with boxes of books at a cheap price.
“These are good resources at a cheap price,” she said. “Paperbacks are only a quarter.”
Stocksdale said it was sad to see the school close. Her daughter is a fifth-grader at Holy Family Catholic School.
“We saw several of the kids [former St. Mary’s students] at Holy Family last night,” she said. “I am just impressed how long it was able to stay open.”
Her friend, Jessica Langdon, a fifth-grade teacher at Wilson, had a box of books and a big smile on her face as she headed toward the checkout table.
“I spent less than 10 bucks; I am real excited,” she said. “You can’t pass up a deal like this.”
