A play about living through and recovering after a tornado seems fitting for Henryville High School, given the disaster that struck just more than a year ago.
But Jolie Lindley, theater director, didn’t choose the script this year, she chose it before the storms ripped the school apart.
The school will show its production of “Acts of God” this weekend only. The show follows a group of teenagers and how they cope with the wake of a disastrous tornado.
“The script goes through the entire range of emotions that teenagers experience in the wake of disaster, and the dialogue is a reflection of that,” Lindley said in a news release. “The students have seen themselves in the characters, and ultimately, the play expresses hope in the end.”
Stephanie Mason, a junior, plays Kim. Her character lost her boyfriend in the storm and has trouble speaking at all after he dies. Mason said having lived through a tornado, the cast has a good grasp on how to express their characters’ emotions.
“We understand what the characters went though and just knowing how they felt about it, we can relate to some of the things that happened to them,” Mason said. “I think that’s going to make a big difference rather than if we hadn’t lived through a tornado.”
Mason said she thinks the community will be able to relate to the play easily, but maybe even get a sense of healing afterward.
“I think many of them are going to relate to it because they talk about their homes destroyed, everything that was lost,” Mason said. “They’re going to feel like they’re still grieving from it — people outside of the community have to go through the same thing.”
Proceeds from the show will also help the school’s theater department recover some of the equipment it lost in the storm. Donations on top of regular ticket prices will be accepted.
“We lost all of our stock set pieces such as platforms and staircase units, many tools, extension cords, portable lighting system and portable sound system,” Lindley said in a release. “Some of that may be replaced by insurance, but most of it will have to be replaced through fundraising.”
