Dressed to Wow: ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ opens Friday night at Charlestown High School

CHARLESTOWN — Audiences will get a look at the world that might lie behind their coats hanging in their wardrobes, as “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” opens Friday at Charlestown High School.

Though “The Chronicles of Narnia” was a box-office hit, theater director Dawn Jenkins said their version of the play follows the classic C.S. Lewis novel very closely.

“The movie has a more fantastical look on it,” Jenkins said. “We’re not really using the movie to drive the show, we’re using C.S. Lewis’ vision.”

Jenkins, in her second year as the theater director, said she’s working to build the program back up and get more students involved. To help, she’s recruited a cast of 40 students, taken from every grade.

Marcus Schaeffer, a senior, plays Aslan the lion. He said having students of all ages and lots of action make the play a lot of fun for him.

“It’s always nice having the kids in there; I think that will add a certain factor to it,” Schaeffer said. “But I think [audiences will] enjoy some of the effects in it and the choreographed battle scenes. There’s a few things you might not expect to see in a high school play.”

Bethany Bolin, a senior, plays Fenris Ulf. She said seeing some of the motivation and development of the evil witch’s army in the play will provide a fresh perspective for audiences who saw the movie.

“I think they’re going to see more of the witch’s army,” Bolin said. “You don’t see a lot of it in the movie. I think they’re going to like the variety of characters we have. There’s the evil and the good and you see them collide. I think they’re going to love it.”
