NEW ALBANY —
Alice J. Schleicher was honored by Ivy Tech Community College Southern Indiana at Ivy Tech’s third Legacy Award Gala at The Grand in New Albany.
Ivy Tech Southern Indiana honored Schleicher for a lifetime of contributions to the community.
Former Jeffersonville Mayor and banking executive Dale Orem served as master of ceremonies.
The Paul Ogle Foundation, AJS Inc., and Geo. Pfau’s Sons Company were event sponsors. More than 400 people attended the gala, which is held biennially. The first Legacy Award Gala in 2008 honored Norman E. “Ned” Pfau Jr., and the second, in 2010, honored the late Paul W. Ogle. Proceeds from the galas support student scholarships.
“Alice has built far more than a successful business,” Ivy Tech Southern Indiana Chancellor Rita Hudson Shourds at the event. “She has built a legacy of service as she graciously supports community, faith, education, and charitable causes.”
Schleicher is the president of AJS Inc., a Sellersburg-based company that is one of the largest KFC franchisers in the country. The company began with one location in Sellersburg in 1977 and now owns locations in four states, and her daughter, Kimra, helps her run the company. AJS celebrated 35 years in business in 2012.
Alice’s company has been deeply involved in the communities served by her company. Contributions have been in the higher education, mental health, sports, wellness and causes that benefit the poor and needy. Her family’s love of Purdue University led her to endow an athletic scholarship, give a lead donation for the indoor practice field and make a significant contribution toward the renovation of the Mackey arena. She helped fund renovations to her home church, Atkins Chapel United Methodist Church, and paid to send an entire group of youth to Jamaica to build a school. The death of her son, Doug, in 1983, prompted several memorial gifts to honor his life.
Personal Counseling Service in Clarksville has a room dedicated to Doug Schleicher’s memory, and Ivy Tech has an annual golf scramble, Douglas Schleicher Memorial Golf Scramble, created in his honor, which benefits student scholarships. The Schleicher family is also generously donating to create the Schleicher Family Quad on Ivy Tech’s campus, lending a true collegiate feel to Ivy Tech’s open green space between the wings of Ogle Hall.
