Ivy Tech commemorates new quad, fountain

A look at how the campus is doing and a dedication of a new feature were celebrated at Ivy Tech Community College in Sellersburg on Tuesday.

Rita Hudson Shourds, chancellor, gave a brief campus update before dedicating the Schleicher Family Quad and Fountain in Ogle Hall.

Hudson Shourds said several initiatives have helped students attain their diplomas in the last year, including expanding advising through online and other programs.

She also said the addition of the Ivy Institute helps students get degrees and certifications on a faster track and offering a dual credit program in high schools has saved families money when the student graduates and moves on to college.

But the new fountain and quad got a lot of attention, too. The Schleicher family, longtime campus supporters who have started scholarships and aided in fundraising, appeared for the dedication ceremony.

Kimra Schleicher, who serves on the college’s regional board, said her family wanted to do something unique for the campus.

“Ivy Tech is very near and dear to our hearts,” Schleicher said. “It’s just an opportunity for us to give something to the students instead of naming a building or something to that effect.”

Hudson Shourds said the quad was completed earlier in the spring, but she still loves seeing students and professors coming out to either have a class on the quad or just eat lunch.

She said the new facility will give students and the rest of the campus a great place to unwind during their day.

“This will kind of be a center for events that we’ll hold for our students and faculty,” Hudson Shourds said. “I just think if the community had more leaders like this family, who are so much about giving back as opposed to having their name on something, I feel like this would be a better place.”
