Clark, Floyd teachers win McDonald’s grants

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Vanessa Read, a teacher at Borden Jr/Sr High School and Katie Haulter, a teacher at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in New Albany, have much more joy than usual to share with their students this holiday season. Read and Haulter are the recipients of a 2012 MAC Grant from McDonald’s Restaurants of Kentuckiana.

For the 10 consecutive years, Kentuckiana middle school teachers shared their ideas of how to “Make Activities Count” in the classroom in hopes of receiving one of McDonald’s MAC Grants. The grant program rewards teachers for innovation and creativity in the classroom by providing funding for hands-on learning activities.

Read will use the grant money to purchase an adult tricycle, a Worksman Port-O-Trike, for her middle school students with special needs. This tricycle will give her students a new source for exercise during physical education class and will help them work on their balance and coordination.

Haulter will bring ancient Greece to life with her sixth grade history class. Students will create models of Athens, Greece. After the projects are completed, Haulter’s students will give tours of Athens to students in grades kindergarten through fifth.

The MAC Grant program provides up to $500 to inspired middle school teachers interested in creating meaningful and interactive educational projects for sixth, seventh and eighth grades. This year, McDonald’s Restaurants of Kentuckiana will award more than $11,000 in grant money to area teachers.
