Silver Creek earned another big win in 2013 on Thursday with a 25-12, 25-15, 18-25, 25-19 home triumph over New Albany on its “pink out” night for breast cancer awareness.
It was the first win for the Dragons under coach Jeff Zimmerman.
“This was a huge win for our program,” Silver Creek coach Jeff Zimmerman said. “To get a win against a team like New Albany says a lot about the growth of our program.”
The Dragons had little trouble winning the first two sets. They opened with a 25-12 victory and followed it with a 25-15 win.
“The first two games, we didn’t play well at all,” New Albany coach John Breeding said. “SC gets a lot of the credit. They served well and played hard. We’re having a hard time right now putting a whole match together.”
The Bulldogs showed some toughness with a third-set win by a 25-18 count.
“The third and fourth games, we played with a lot of heart and played pretty well,” Breeding said. “The kids played hard and come together as a group.”
“We knew going into the third set that they weren’t going to quit,” Zimmerman said. “They have way too much tradition just to lay down.”
Silver Creek put the match away with a gutty 25-19 win in the fourth and final set.
“I have an awesome bunch of kids who decided to leave it all on the court,” Zimmerman said. “They are truly like sisters. The leadership on this team is incredible.”
Liz Mann led the Dragons with 12 kills, 10 digs and a pair of aces. Katelyn Ramser had 35 assists and nine digs. Bailee Popp had a team-best four aces.
“We had some great contributions from a lot of players,” Zimmerman said. “Our coaches — Beth Hogan, Todd Zimmerman and Liz Cooper — have really worked their tails off on preparing this team for the postseason.”
New Albany was led by Audrey Donastorg’s 13-kill, two-block performance. Alexis Lete had seven kills and four blocks, while Brook McCoy added five kills and 16 digs. Sadie Meyer led the Bulldogs with 16 assists.
