CHARLESTOWN — Highlander Youth Recreation came back from 4-0 and 6-2 deficits to pull off a stunning 7-6 win in eight innings over Jeffersonville/GRC in 11-12 District V softball tournament on Saturday.
Jeff/GRC pitcher Emily Gray had a 4-0 lead and a no-hitter going through five innings before HYR’s comeback.
Jeff/GRC scored two runs in the second and fourth innings. HYR fought back to tie the score at 4-4 with a four-run sixth inning.
After Jeff/GRC scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead, HYR’s Katelin Dreher scored the tying run with two outs on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, teammate Ruthanne Fritzinger was thrown out at the plate trying to score the winning run.
Jeff/GRC went scoreless in the top of the eighth and HYR took advantage. Rachel Denison opened the inning with a walk. Denison then beat out a throw to second base on Cassidy Spalding’s bunt. After Morgan Cameron walked to load the bases, Genni Andres grounded the ball to second base. Denison beat the throw to home plate for the winning run.
Abbie Engle went 2-for-4, stole three bases, scored twice and had an RBI for HYR. Andres scored twice and stole a base.
Chelsie Marshall went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Asia Thomas had a double, scored twice and knocked in a run for Jeff.
