DISTRICT V NOTEBOOK: Jeff 13-14 softball takes district title

BY GREG MENGELT

Jeffersonville’s 13-14 softball team avenged two earlier losses to Silver Creek and won the District V championship by defeating Creek, 9-1 on Monday.

Jeffersonville will play in the state finals at Fort Wayne later this month.

Jeff, which had been defeated 9-3 and 8-1 in pool play by Silver Creek — had a seven-run second inning to take the lead for good.

“(The big inning) was a load off of my mind,” Jeff coach Marion Shepherd said. “I was really nervous the last three days. Our game plan was to jump out to an early lead and let our defense do its job. It worked out just like that.”

Sydney Daab gave Jeff the lead with a two-run single that scored Mollie Northam and Sarah Bridge. Later in the inning, Paige Thompson drew a bases loaded walk and Northam — in her second turn at bat in the inning — singled home the sixth and seventh runs.

That was all pitcher Kayla Poppe and the Jeff defense would need. Poppe gave up just two hits — none until a double by Tiffany Harper in the fifth inning — and one fifth-inning run. She struck out two Silver Creek batters.

“We got a great pitching performance from Kayla,” Shepherd said. “She had it all together tonight.”

Maddie Powell had three singles and scored twice for Jeff. Sarah Bridges was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

“The girls played a great game tonight,” Shepherd said. “We had errors earlier this week and didn’t hit the ball very well against Silver Creek. We’re a good hitting team and we put it all together tonight.”

9-10 Softball

• Charlestown scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to score a come-from-behind 10-9 win over Clarksville in the tournament’s first game.

Down 9-8, Brooke Adams hit a bases-loaded double to score Megan Crawford and Josie Barnett to end the game.

Bethany Hall led Charlestown by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Courtney Holmes reached every time she came to the plate for Clarksville. She had two singles, drew a walk and reached on an error, scoring three times and knocking home two runs.

13-14 Baseball

• Billy Huttsell threw a no-hitter and went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two runs batted in. He also drew a walk and scored three times in Charlestown’s 11-0 five-inning win over Clarksville.

Corey Snider scored twice for Charlestown and Matt Whisman had a two-RBI double in the first inning.

• In a preview of Wednesday’s 13-14 championship game, Jeffersonville topped Highlander Youth Recreation 11-9.

Jeff scored eight runs in the third inning and nearly let the lead slip away.

HYR nearly came back from 8-0 and 11-6 down with a rally in the seventh inning.

With bases loaded and two outs, Aaron Wenger was brought in to stop HYR. When an 0-1 pitch to Kyle Bramble was called a ball, Jeff catcher Michael Romans fired the ball to third base and picked off Tregg Scherer for the final out of the game.

Jeff’s Tyler White went 2-for-3, including a two-run home run in the second inning. He scored twice and had four RBI. Wenger scored twice and had a two-RBI ground-rule double with the bases loaded in the second. Alex Vogel and John Smedel were both 2-for-3 for Jeff.

HYR’s Joey Quinkert’s had a three-run home run in the seventh to set up the dramatic finish.
