‘Wednesday Night Lightning’ to take place at Clark County Fairgrounds

If you are an avid go-kart racer, then you need to be at the Clark County 4-H Fairgrounds outside of Charlestown tonight.

The first-ever “Wednesday Night Lightning” will take place as part of Clark County Fair festivities. Go-kart racers from across Southern Indiana and Kentucky will compete on the 1/5-mile dirt track at the fairgrounds, starting at 7 p.m. “Wednesday Night Lightning” festivities will begin at 5 p.m. with a kart show, which will feature vintage go-karts, quarter-midget karts and kid karts. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m.

Event promoter Keith Levell says the racing will be as competitive as weekend shows at the Sportsdrome in Jeffersonville and Salem Speedway.

“It will be just a lot of close racing action,” said Levell, who has raced go-karts since 1993. “It’s a good family environment.”

Levell expects several go-karts to be entered in the event’s various divisions, which will include baby kart (ages 5-7), junior sportsman and adult classes. Each division will have heat races between eight to 10 laps and a 15-lap feature. Ages of the drivers will range from 5 to 60.

“It’s not just a sport for young men,” Levell said.

Levell also expects several female racers, including his 21-year-old daughter Kimberly McKim, to compete. She started racing go-karts in 1995.

The baby kart division will have a fourth-generation racer competing in his first-ever race in 5-year-old Ethan Trinkle, who is from Jeffersonville.

Entry fee for go-karts is $15 per class. Pit passes will cost $10. Grandstand admission is free.
