CHARLESTOWN — Silver Creek showed why it’s the District V 9-10 All-Star favorite with a five-inning 11-0 win over Jeff/GRC on Tuesday at Charlestown Little League.
Mackenzie Bush pitched a complete-game no-hit gem and struck out 12. She only allowed three base runners — all on walks — and didn’t allow a Jeff base runner to go past second base.
“Mac threw a very nice game,” said Chris Bush, her coach and father.
“She’s one of the best pitchers in the whole state,” said Jeff coach John Smith.
After going down 1-2-3 in the first inning, Silver Creek erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the second.
The key hits were by Bailey Miller, who hit a two-RBI single with no outs, and Bailee Popp, who doubled home the sixth and seventh runs in the inning. Popp’s double was the only extra-base hit in the game.
“(The big second inning) made the team relax a little bit,” Coach Bush said. “With a seven-run lead and Mac on the mound, it makes everyone’s jobs a little bit easier. But Jeff is good and we never, at any time, thought the game was over.”
After going scoreless in the third, Silver Creek picked up another run in the fourth, when Allison Matty made things happen on her own. Matty, who was 2-for-2 with a walk, reached on an infield single, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
Silver Creek put the game away via the 10-run rule with a three-run fifth. Olivia Scarbrough, who went 3-for-3 and scored three times, led off with an infield base hit. After Bush reached on an throwing error, Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Scarbrough scored when Jeff failed to throw her out at the plate following Vanessa Parrish’s ground ball. Taylor Williams and Bailey Money drew RBI bases on balls for the 11-0 lead.
After two days of play, Silver Creek is tied atop the 9-10 standings with Highlander Youth Recreation and tourney host Charlestown.
Silver Creek is back in action on Wednesday when it faces 0-2 Clarksville. Jeff/GRC faces Charlestown earlier in the evening.
• HYR scored seven runs in the second inning and that was more than enough for its ace, Laken Comingore in a 12-0 win over Clarksville.
Comingore scattered three singles and struck out six during the four-inning game.
Morgan Wagner and Allison Shields led the HYR offense. Wagner drew two walks, reached on a fielder’s choice and scored three times. Shields was 1-for-1, drew a walk and scored twice.
LITTLE LEAGUE NOTEBOOK
Another strong pitching performance lifts Charlestown
CHARLESTOWN — For the second straight night, Charlestown’s 13-14 All-Star team got a brilliant performance on the pitching mound.
A night after Billy Huttsell threw a complete-game no-hitter, Brad Baker allowed just three hits and one unearned run in the first inning as Charlestown defeated Silver Creek, 4-3.
Baker went six innings and struck out two Silver Creek batters and walked just two. He allowed just three base runners.
Baker was also big at the plate, going 3-for-3. He had a two-RBI single during Charlestown’s crucial four-run second inning rally. Corey Snider also had an RBI single in the inning.
Lucas Barnett went 3-for-4 for Silver Creek. After doubling in the first, he scored the game’s first run on Andrew Hunt’s RBI double.
• In the final game of 13-14 baseball pool play, New Albany topped Clarksville 13-10 to finish 3-2.
New Albany scored eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to erase a 6-3 deficit.
Damon Nelson had an RBI single and later scored in the fourth. He finished 1-for-2 with three walks and scored three times.
11-year-olds
• Silver Creek’s sixth, seventh and eighth batters all had big games as Creek defeated New Albany, 13-4 on Tuesday.
Tyler Simms, Kynan Jarrett and Braden Pennington went a combined 5-for-7 and scored a combined eight runs in Silver Creek’s second victory of the tournament.
The trio also keyed Creek’s two big innings — a five-run fifth and a four-run sixth. Brandon Smith opened the fifth inning with a walk and was followed by two-out singles by Simms, Jarrett and Pennington. In the sixth, Dalton Smith reached on an error, then scored on Jarrett’s single. Simms and Pennington drew walks and later scored in the inning.
• Highlander Youth Recreation finished pool play unbeaten after a 8-5 win over Charlestown. HYR, which will play Jeffersonville for the 11-year-old championship on Wednesday, scored eight runs in the first three innings and held on for the win.
HYR’s Trey Fulton went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the second inning. He scored twice.
