TRIBUNE ROUNDUP: Dogs prepare for River City with win at Eastern

The New Albany volleyball team gained some momentum heading into Saturday’s River City Invitational with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-13 victory at Pekin Eastern on Thursday.
Bulldog senior Brandi Waller had a great match in the middle, spiking 19 kills. Teammates Sarah Mathews and Shelby Hoskins had nine and eight kills, respectively.
Sophomore setter Lauren Bratcher set up New Albany hitters throughout the night, distributing 39 assists. Also for the Bulldogs (4-0), Emily Knight made four digs and Tiffany Owens had three service aces.
“We played OK,” New Albany head coach John Breeding said. “We need to get refocused for this week’s tournament. We played well in spurts.”
The River City Invitational will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at NAHS.
• Pioneers rebound against Salem: After falling in three games to archrival Floyd Central on Tuesday, Providence bounced back to win at Salem, 25-18, 25-14, 25-8.
Lucy Knott paced the Pioneers with 11 service points, six kills and three blocks. Teammate Laura Der had five kills and four digs, while Providence’s Ashley Ricks spiked seven kicks and made two blocks. Pioneer setter Elizabeth Endris distributed 27 assists.
“Tonight, we were able to get everyone a good bit of playing time,” Providence head coach Terri Purichia said. “I was pleased with the effort from our team. We served the ball very aggressively, and our offense looked sharp.”
The Pioneers will play in the Yorktown Invitational on Saturday.
BOYS’ SOCCER
• Bulldogs down Corydon: New Albany improved its record to 2-0 with a 2-0 road victory at Corydon.
Junior forward Steven Dobson and senior forward Keegan O’Connor each kicked in a goal for the Bulldogs. New Albany midfielder Stephan Kossis recorded an assist on each score.
The Dogs will play in the Shelbyville Invitational on Saturday.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
• New Albany defeats Dragons: The Bulldogs had three players score two goals apiece to defeat host Silver Creek, 8-1.
The scoring trio included junior Kaitlin Robinett, sophomore Kayton Cole and freshman Rachel Novak. Teammates Kelsey Graeter and Stephanie Cotner each kicked in a goal.
Robinett, Graeter and the Bulldogs’ Kameren Cole had an assist apiece. Silver Creek scored its lone goal on a penalty kick.
New Albany will host Bedford North Lawrence on Saturday. The Dragons will host Butler on Wednesday.
BOYS’ TENNIS
• Warriors sweep New Wash: Visiting Christian Academy of Indiana upped its record to 2-0 with a 5-0 victory over New Washington.
The most competitive match happened at No. 1 singles, where the Warriors’ Jacob Loveland downed Drake Krohn, 6-2, 7-6(7-5). Other singles wins for CAI were David Williams at No. 2 and Morgan Wilder at No. 3.
At No. 1 doubles, the Warrior tandem of Josh McKain and Joel Sellers upended Cortlin Sawyer and Dustin Hobbs, 6-2, 6-1. At two doubles, Gary Jones and Levi Stewart downed the Mustangs’ Tarren Clapp and Matt Renschler, 6-1, 6-3.
CAI will host Silver Creek on Tuesday.
CROSS COUNTRY
• Pioneers’ Book wins Charlestown Invite: Providence’s Oliver Book won the Charlestown Invitational boys’ race at Charlestown State Park with a time of 17:16.
In the team standings, Home School Union was third with 95 points and Providence finished sixth with 161. Home School Union’s Kyle and Kevin Sweetland placed seventh and ninth, respectively. Providence’s Jake Ford was 10th.
The Providence girls’ team finished fourth in the team standings with 126 points. Home School Union’s Hannah Rucker placed second, and the Pioneers’ Linden Spalding was fourth.
Both Providence teams will run in the St. Xavier Tiger Run in Louisville on Saturday.
