FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Highlanders break four-game skid at Jennings

Junior Daniel Derr rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown on Friday night to lead the Floyd Central football team to a 31-12 victory at Jennings County. The win snapped the Highlanders’ four-game losing streak.

Derr put Floyd (4-4, 2-4 Hoosier Hills Conference) up 7-0 with a 34-yard touchdown run at the 5:40 mark of the first quarter.

The Highlanders added 10 points in the second quarter to take a 17-0 halftime lead. Floyd place-kicker Cole Richards nailed a 42-yard field goal with 10:42 left in the half. At the 8:03 mark, Highlander junior Matt Lowe intercepted a pass and returned it 13 yards into the end zone.

The Floyd lead extended to 24-0 with 8:25 left in the third thanks to a 16-yard TD run by sophomore Patrick Uhl.

After the Panthers (0-8, 0-6) scored 12 unanswered points on two TD catches by Ryan Stearns, Highlander quarterback Max Guenther iced the game with a 4-yard TD run with 4:25 remaining in regulation.

Guenther was 7-of-8 passing for 37 yards and an interception. The Highlanders accumulated 300 total yards, 263 coming on the ground.

Floyd will host New Albany next Friday.

• No. 9 Tecumseh thumps Providence: Class A No. 9 Tecumseh scored 33 points in the second half to roll past visiting Providence, 47-21.

The Braves’ Jacob Duncan did the most damage, scoring 18 of his team’s 20 third-quarter points. He had touchdown runs of 9 and 59 yards, and picked off an Anthony Denis pass and returned it 50 yards for another score.

Sophomore Spencer Corrao was the Pioneers’ leading rusher, scampering 146 yards on 21 carries. He also had a 15-yard TD run in the third quarter.

Teammate Ethan Cook, the state’s No. 1 rusher, was held to 67 yards on 12 carries. Denis was 6-of-15 passing for 86 yards and two interceptions.

Providence’s other two touchdowns were a 17-yard reception by Steve Burrous in the first quarter and 1-yard run by Shane Sparks in the fourth.

The Pioneers (4-4) will host town rival Clarksville next Friday.
