H.S. FOOTBALL: Quartet of area players makes AP All-State teams

Pirate defenders Garcia, Harper earn spots on 3A squad

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Four area players were recently named to The Associated Press All-State football teams.

A pair of Charlestown players made the Class 3A All-State team in seniors Jimmy Garcia and Jake Harper. Garcia, a defensive lineman, made 82 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and nine sacks during the 2013 season. Harper, a linebacker, had 111 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and four sacks.

Floyd Central senior Brandon Stout earned a spot on the Class 5A squad as a defensive back. Stout made a team-high five interceptions this past season along with 34 tackles.

Also, Stout shared the team lead for most receptions with 20 as a wide receiver. He had a team-high 391 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions, which also was a team high.

Providence senior Owen Mattingly made the Class 2A All-State team as a defensive back. In 2013, Mattingly had 88 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four interceptions.

Plus Mattingly was the Pioneers’ starting quarterback for the majority of the season. He rushed for 628 yards and scored 13 touchdowns with 12 coming on the ground.

Three players received honorable-mention votes for the 6A team. They were New Albany senior running back Tuwan Payton, Bulldogs’ senior place-kicker Vincent Falcone and Jeffersonville senior tight end Dionte Allen.

Two Highlanders made the 5A honorable-mention list in senior offensive lineman Aaron Smith and junior running back Gaige Klingsmith.

Silver Creek senior wide receiver Bobby Haines was an honorable-mention pick for the 4A All-State team.
