TEN TO WATCH: Basketball season is underway

Some big games are on tap early

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — It’s basketball season — and for two weeks at least — the courts belong to the girls.

All four local teams won in Tuesday’s Henryville Tipoff Tournament, which could be a good sign for Southern Indiana’s small schools in 2013-14. Henryville, Clarksville, Providence and Christian Academy should also be improved.

Floyd Central, which is expected to be the area’s top big school, opens Saturday at Evansville Harrison. Jeffersonville, which has its fourth coach in four years in Mike Warren, travels to North Harrison on Friday for its opener.

Here’s a look at the week’s top 10 games to watch this week, beginning tonight through next Tuesday:

DAY/TIME: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

LAST 10 YEARS: Austin 8-2.

LAST YEAR: At Austin 63, New Washington 45.

REASON TO WATCH: Two defending sectional champions meet early in the season. It’s the opener for New Wash, which dropped only three games last year. One was to Austin. This should be a big early win for the Mustangs.

THE PICK: New Washington 55, Austin 52.

TIME: 7:30 p.m. (Henryville Tipoff Tournament)

LAST 10 YEARS: Clarksville 1-0.

LAST YEAR: At Clarksville 59, Irvington Prep 31.

REASON TO WATCH: Clarksville, which won just four times a year ago, put up 104 points in its season-opening 84-point win over Medora.

THE PICK:  Clarksville 77, Irvington Prep 49.

TIME: 7:30 p.m. (Henryville Tipoff Tournament)

LAST 10 YEARS: Providence 5-0.

LAST YEAR: Providence 51, at Shawe 25.

REASON TO WATCH: Freshman Claire Rauck broke the Providence single-game scoring record with 33 points — in her debut. Rauck and the Pioneers expect to have their first winning season since 2003 and the 31-point win over Crothersville was a great start.

THE PICK: Providence 69, Shawe 39.

TIME: 7:30 p.m. (Henryville Tipoff Tournament)

LAST 10 YEARS: Henryville 8-6.

LAST YEAR: Henryville 47, at Clarksville 28 (Tipoff Tournament); At Henryville 37, Clarksville 25 (regular season).

REASON TO WATCH: After Tuesday’s results, it’s pretty clear that this is like a semifinal game. The winner will go on to the championship and the loser will head to the consolation game.

THE PICK: Henryville 60, Clarksville 47.
