H.S. BOYS' BASKETBALL: Warriors fall in OT despite 44 from Hayes

VEVAY — Switzerland County hit a team-record nine 3-pointers and erased late eight-point deficit to beat visiting Christian Academy 73-72 in overtime on Friday.

Christian Academy (3-5) was missing a starter who was ill, a senior out with an injury and two starters who had fouled out in the final minute of regulation when the Pacers made their charge.

“We had a lot of young kids out there and they made a lot of young mistakes,” CAI coach Steve Kerberg said. “[Switzerland County] hit some really tough shots down the stretch. The last minute all went their way.

“I was happy with the effort. We battled the whole game.”

The Class 2A No. 18 Pacers outscored Christian Academy 11-10 in overtime to improve to 6-1 and hand the Warriors their fourth straight loss.

“I don’t think our record reflects the kind of team we can be by the end of the year,” Kerberg said. “This was a very tough road loss against a good Switzerland County team.”

Austin Clark and Chase Ritch combined for 46 points, including all nine 3s, to offset Aaron Hayes’s 44-point outburst for the Warriors. Hayes played the entire 36 minutes in the loss.

“That’s by far the best game he’s play the last two years,” Kerberg said of Hayes. “He did everything we asked him to do. He’s growing as a player on a regular basis. I’m so proud of him. If anybody deserves it, it’s him.”

Aaron Eldridge added 18 points for the Warriors.

The Warriors will participate in the McKee Munk Invitational at Henryville on Thursday. They open with Crothersville (2-6) at 10 a.m. They will face either Oldenburg Academy or the host Hornets in the final round.
