DISTRICT 5 LITTLE LEAGUE: Clark blast helps New Albany stun HYR

NEW ALBANY —

New Albany scored five times in the sixth inning just before the rains came to stun Highlander Youth Recreation 7-5 in the District 5 opener on Saturday.

After two HYR errors helped New Albany build some momentum in the inning, Dylan Clark sent a Joe Wilkinson pitch over the right-center fence at Mt. Tabor to help it overcome a 5-2 deficit.

Trevor Laughead drew a leadoff walk to get New Albany started in the sixth. With one out, Owen Tanksley drew a walk. A wild pitch put the Laughead and Tanksley on second and third.

Wilkinson struck out Nolan Keeler for what appeared to be the second out, but the third strike was dropped and the ensuing throw to first sailed into the outfield, allowing Laughead to score. A Cooper Biven ground ball was fielded by Wilkinson but thrown past first base and Tanksley scored to make it 5-4.

Clark followed with a three-run home run that gave New Albany its first lead since the second inning.

New Albany jumped on the board first with a run in the first inning, but HYR scored a pair of runs in both the second and third to take a 4-1 advantage. After New Albany cut the advantage to 4-2, HYR tacked on another run to make it 5-2 heading into the sixth.

New Albany had two outs in the bottom of the sixth when a storm delayed the contest. The Floyd County rivals were able to complete the game, but the day’s two others were postponed until Sunday. Those games had not been reported at press time.

There are five District 5 baseball games at Mt. Tabor and four softball games at Grant Line Elementary School scheduled for tonight.
