H.S. ROUNDUP: Devils beat Memorial to win Jeff Classic

Clarksville volleyball takes Borden Tournament title

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Jeffersonville won four of the five individual championships and won the Jeff Classic by seven points over eighth-ranked Evansville Memorial on Saturday.

Three of the Red Devils’ four titles came against Memorial, which had upset No. 6 Jasper 4-1 earlier this week. Jeff beat the potential semistate opponent 4-1 in head-to-head matches.

“For us to beat Memorial 4-1 head-to-head after finishing behind them in the last invite was a nice accomplishment for the team,” Devils coach Mark Reilly said.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be played over two days. With the rain on Friday, it became a one-day event, forcing players to play three matches in one day. It also forced the third sets to go to 10-point tiebreakers instead of full sets.

Two of Jeff’s three singles — at No. 2 and No. 3 singles — came in a third-set tiebreaker. Brock Winchell defeated Chad Barron 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 at No. 2 singles and Connor Buntin topped Michael Koch 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 at No. 3.

The Devils’ other wins over the Tigers was at No. 1 doubles, where Sam Coward and Jack Reilly needed a 7-4 victory in the first-set tiebreaker before finishing Brandon Wu and Chase Throop 6-3 in the second set.

Memorial’s only win over Jeff came in the No. 1 singles championship match, where Erick Schuette defeated Austin Hunt 6-0, 6-4. Jeff also won at No. 2 doubles as Chase Kayrouz and Justin Padgett defeated rivals Nick White and Zach Daniel of New Albany 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

The title was the Devils’ second straight in the Jeff Classic New Albany finished fourth overall. Eastern placed eighth.
