CLASS 2A BOYS' SOCCER SECTIONAL: Red Devils win sectional opener, 4-1

Kwitonda scores twice as Jeff starts title defense

FLOYDS KNOBS — The Jeffersonville boys’ soccer team began its defense of the Class 2A Floyd Central Sectional championship on Monday by defeating Corydon Central 4-1 in the sectional opener.

The Red Devils (14-3-2) will face Silver Creek at approximately 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the semifinals. The first semifinal will pit New Albany against the host Highlanders at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Leonard Kwitonda gave Jeff a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of the match off an assist from teammate Dylan Stinson. Two minutes later, the Panthers tied the score at 1-1 with a goal from Isidro Chavez.

The Red Devils took the lead for good at 2-1 with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Jeff’s Isaiah Salazar got fouled in the goal box. That set up a successful penalty kick by the Red Devils’ Alex Duckworth. Jeff held the one-goal advantage at halftime.

“Being up 2-1 at halftime settled us down and helped us regroup,” Red Devils’ coach Carson Webb said.

Jeff’s advantage grew to 3-1 in the 63rd minute of the match as Ben Mann scored off an Austin Ali assist. Kwitonda made the final goal at the 77th minute off a Duckworth assist.

Webb praised his team’s defense after Corydon deadlocked the score at one.

“We made a formation change. We played more of a counter-attack style after they scored,” Webb said. “We did play better defense in the second half, and it was more because of the formation change than a personnel change.”

According to Webb, the Red Devils and the Dragons will be meeting for the first time in a few years on Wednesday.

“I’m friends with their coach [Colin Bell] and I’m sure they will be ready to go,” Webb said.
