Class 2A No. 1 Providence made it a special night for its seniors with a 25-17, 25-14, 25-14 sweep of Butler (Ky.) at Wednesday’s Senior Night.
It was the final home game for Maile Daniel, Abby Spitznagel and Mary Kate Meyer as Pioneers.
“It’s hard to put into words the impact this group has had,” Providence coach Terri Purichia said of her seniors. “When they were freshmen, we didn’t even win a sectional. It’s come full circle since they’ve been here and they’re a really big reason for the success we’ve had. They’re a tremendous group of kids and great leaders.”
Daniel, who Purichia said, “had a really good game,” finished with seven kills and one block.
Patricia Mattingly hd 29 assists, 10 digs, 12 service points and four aces for the Pioneers. Jacquie Hornung had a Providence-best nine kills, Haley Libs had six kills and four digs and Audrey Shannon contributed with nine digs, eight services points and a pair of aces.
In her second game back from an injury, Taylor Wilson had seven kills and a pair of blocks.
“She’s been doing really well,” Purichia said of Wilson. “She’s been able to play the front row and she looks real good. I might let her play some back row this weekend [at the Clinton Prairie Invitational] and see how she does.”
The Pioneers will meet defending Class A state champion Cowan in the opening round at Clinton Prairie.
