Providence senior Spitznagel wins Mental Attitude Award

MUNCIE — Providence senior Abby Spitznagel was named the Class 2A Mental Attitude Award winner following the Pioneers’ state championship victory over Hammond Noll on Saturday.

Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. The Committee presented $1,000 to Providence High School's general scholarship fund in Spitznagel’s name.

“It means a lot,” she said. “I’ve been playing volleyball since I was real little, so it’s for her and the coaches. It’s something I never dreamed about getting. I’m really so thankful for it.”

Spitznagel is ranked seventh in her class at Providence. She is a member of the President’s List, she volunteers for National Honor Society tutoring, is a part of Crossroads Ministry and has participated in a mission trip to Nicaragua.

“She’s the best leader I’ve ever seen,” junior Taylor Wilson said. “She’s the hardest working athlete I’ve ever met.”

“I definitely think she deserves it,” sophomore Jacquie Hornung said.

Spitznagel is the daughter of Frank and former Providence volleyball star Janie Spitznagel and resides in New Albany. She plans to attend Indiana University in the fall and is interest in medicine.

Spitznagel said she’s proud that she can leave the Providence volleyball as a champion.

“It’s good to go out with a bang,” Spitznagel said. “It’s what we’ve been looking for. We definitely did it for all the past players, the Providence community and our fans and our parents. It’s all for them. They’ve helped us come this far.”
