TRACK REGIONAL: Local trio win regional championships

Parrish, Hamsley, Dowdell all winners

Local trio win regional championships

BLOOMINGTON — It’s been quite a spring for Floyd Central’s Codie Hamsley, New Albany’s Jermaine Parrish and Jeffersonville’s Tyrell Dowdell.

The senior trio added regional championships to their resumes on Thursday and will go for state championships next Friday at Indiana University in the IHSAA State Finals.

Parrish — the defending 100-meter state champion — won the 100 and the 200 at Thursday’s Bloomington North Regional. He ran a blazing time of 10.56 seconds in the 100, .43 seconds ahead of Floyd Central runner-up Gaige Klingsmith, who will join Parrish at IU on Friday.

The top three finishers in each event advanced to state. Others could advance based on time, height and distance.

In the 200, Parrish edged his cousin, Clarksville’s Marquise Parrish, for the title. Jermaine Parrish, who was runner-up in the event as a junior, finished the 200 in 22.34 and Marquise Parrish ran it in 22.56.

Hamsley also advanced in two events. He may have had the most impressive performance of the night with a toss of 201 feet, 3 inches in the discus. That was nearly 40 feet ahead of runner-up Logan Britton of Owen Valley. Borden’s Brett Williams placed third to punch his ticket to state.

In the shot put, Hamsley was second to Bloomington North’s Lorrell Williams with a toss of 53-10.  The Highlanders finished fourth as a team. Bloomington South took the team title, 27 points ahead of North.

Dowdell, who was eighth in the 200 after posting the fastest preliminary time, easily won the 400. His 49.18 beat Edgewood’s Zack Harrison by nearly two full seconds. Dowdell was fifth in the event as a junior. Teammate David Morales finished fourth in the 400 and will have to wait to see if his 51.70 will be good enough to get to state.

Jeffersonville’s Chase Scott will return to state after finishing second in the long jump with a leap of 21-7 1/4, and Floyd Central’s Adam Wallace advanced to state by placing third in the 800 with a run of 1:59.14.

Eastern’s Tevin Wolf cleared 6-6 in the high jump and finished second to South’s Alex Olson. The Musketeer senior will be making his second appearance in the state meet in the high jump.

Jeff’s 400 relay and 1,600 teams both finished third to earn spots at state.

Jeffersonville finished fifth as a team. New Albany was seventh, Borden finished 14th and Eastern 18th of 29 teams.

Silver Creek’s Morgan Davidson (fourth in the 800) and Isaak Haas (fifth in the 3,200), Floyd Central’s Jacob Marguet (fourth in the pole vault) and Kahler Davis (fifth in the 400) and Borden’s fifth-place 3,200 relay team will have to wait and see if they earned a spot in the state finals.

Chase Blakeman and Grant Foster of Floyd both made the finals in the 110 high hurdles and finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Blakeman was sixth in the 300 hurdles, two spots ahead of New Washington’s Adan Diaz.

North Harrison’s Jonathan Reynolds won the 1,600 and the 3,200, just ahead of Corydon Central rival Levi Taylor in both events.
