WOMEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS: Sullivan officially named IUS tennis coach

Sullivan has been interim coach since October

NEW ALBANY —  Brian Sullivan has officially been named the IU Southeast women’s tennis coach after holding the position of interim head coach since October 2013.

Under his leadership, the Grenadiers won their 15th-straight KIAC tournament title and finished the year with a 14-7 record. Freshman Whitney Batliner was a NAIA All-American Honorable Mention selection.

“Two of my most important mentors in tennis have been Sam Peden and Bill Ryall, both former women’s tennis coaches here at IU Southeast,” Sullivan said.  “I take very seriously the responsibility that comes with upholding the tradition and success that we’ve come to expect here based on hard work of these gentlemen, as well as so many great players over the years.”

The 2014-15 squad is well-positioned with the addition of Floyd Central’s Dana Frank and Evansville North No. 1 singles player Haley Jones.  The duo joins four past First-Team All-Conference selections: Katherine Clark, Maddie Ikerd, Katie Morrison and Katie Walsh.

“There have been many outstanding teams here, but the most recent squad really laid the groundwork for the program to take a significant step forward,” Sullivan said. “The return of such a strong nucleus, combined with a very talented recruiting class, has the 2014-15 team positioned to be one of our best ever.”

Sullivan will remain as the assistant women’s basketball coach as well.

“I am excited that Brian is expanding his role in the department,” IU Southeast athletic director Joe Glover said. “He took over under difficult circumstances and helped keep the team focused on its goal of a KIAC title. He is also an excellent recruiter, and I have no doubt that he will continue to bring the area’s top players into the program”

The Grenadiers open their fall season at Indiana Wesleyan on Aug. 23.
