GRIDIRON AFTERMATH: Generals, Pirates, Devils earn sectional wins

Each team on own quest to snap title droughts

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — WEEK 10 AWARDS

• Player of the Week: Tyler Odle, Charlestown. Arguably the greatest wide receiver in Pirate history — and that’s saying something — Odle added to his legacy in last Friday’s win over Mitchell. The senior caught three passes for 100 yards and scored twice — and he didn’t play an offensive snap in the second half. He returned a kickoff 80 yards for a third touchdown, giving the Pirates a 56-0 lead 10 seconds into the second half.

• Team of the Week: Jeffersonville. The Red Devils beat rival New Albany and set records all over the place. Their 49 points scored in the first half tied the 1968 team’s mark set against Clarksville. Tyler Fridley’s 2,543 passing yards and 2,953 yards of total offense set single-season Jeff records. Ricky Embry’s 11 touchdowns tied Jim Croudep’s school record and Embry is 10 yards short of Dionte Allen’s single-season mark of 791 yards set last year. With 62 points on Friday, the Red Devils have now scored 451, setting a new single-season high.

• Play of the Week: Christian Brown’s romp. After scoring three touchdowns to give Clarksville a 20-0 lead over Eastern, Brown went 96 yards for his fourth score to put away the Musketeers. In the past two weeks, Brown has rushed for 484 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown run on the final play of the game that gave the Generals a 24-20 victory over Providence in the city championship.

• Coach of the Week: Chris Brafford, Charlestown defensive coordinator. Everybody knew coming into the season that the Pirate offense would be virtually unstoppable — and it has been in racking up a state-high 609 points. Brafford’s defense has been equally impressive and earned its fourth shutout of the season against Mitchell. The Pirates are giving up just 6.3 points per game, which is fourth in the state, giving Charlestown a whopping state-high 54.6-point average winning margin. “Chris has done an excellent job keeping the kids focused and prepared,” Hawkins said. “We are lucky to have him.”
