H.S. GIRLS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Pirates thrash Southwestern in opener, 64-39

Henning scores 23 to lead Charlestown

CHARLESTOWN — Charlestown’s girls’ basketball team won its season opener for the first time in four years, blowing out visiting Southwestern 64-39 on Thursday.

The Pirates outscored Southwestern 16-2 in the first quarter and led 29-11 at the break.

“It’s awesome,” Charlestown coach Sam Terrell said. “The girls totally deserve this. They played with hard, hard effort and they played together and played smart. They really wanted it.”

Sophomore Kaitlynn Henning led the Pirates with 23 points and classmate Justice Burdin added 21 points and a team-best 14 rebounds. Seven different Charlestown players scored and Terrell said all 10 Pirates who played contributed to the victory.

“It was a total team effort,” Terrell said. “I mean a total team effort.”

Charlestown has a full week off before going to Corydon Central for its first road game and its Mid-Southern Conference opener next Friday.

• Hornets improve to 2-0: Henryville won its second Henrvyille Tip-off Tournament game, defeating Medora 49-31 on Thursday.

“We saw improvement tonight on both ends of the floor,” Henryville coach Josh Conrad said. “I thought we did a good job finding the open person in the first three quarters. We know we have things to work on the defensive end, but the players are working hard and that's what counts.”

For the second straight game, freshman Emily Hollis led the Hornets in scoring. She followed up a 19-point performance in Henryville’s season opening win over Irvington Prep with 24 points against Medora. Nine different Hornets scored in the victory.

Hannah Elkins led Medora with nine points.

NEXT: Henryville (2-0) at Clarksville (Henryville Tipoff Tournament), Friday.
