H.S. BOYS' BASKETBALL: Carmony resigns at Henryville

Veteran coach went 3-38 in two years

HENRYVILLE — Dan Carmony’s tenure as the Henryville High School head boys’ basketball coach has come to an end.

Carmony recently resigned as the Hornets’ boss after compiling a 3-38 record in his two seasons at the West Clark school. Henryville athletic director Bill Niece said it was a challenge for the veteran Indiana high school basketball coach to turn around a program that has been short on talent and experience the past couple of years.

“It was tough for him to come in here with a young and inexperienced team,” Niece said. “It would’ve been tough for anybody coming into this program.”

Henryville went 0-20 record in Carmony’s first Henryville campaign in 2012-13. The Hornets improved their mark this past year to 3-18. They snapped a 30-game losing streak on Dec. 21 with a 58-42 victory over Southwestern at Furnish Gymnasium.

Henryville then won its following contest against Madison Shawe on Dec. 26, 42-30. It was the first time the Hornets had won back-to-back contests since the 2011-12 season.

Henryville’s third victory was a 60-50 home overtime win over South Central on Jan. 31. The triumph broke a nine-game Southern Athletic Conference losing streak.

The 2013-14 campaign was Carmony’s 16th season as a high school coach in the Hoosier State. He has a 174-161 career record. Carmony has posted 10 winning seasons in his 16 years.

Prior to coming to Henryville, Carmony coached at Morristown, Indian Creek, Greenfield-Central and Rushville. He has won three sectional championships and one regional title in his career.

Carmony’s sectional titles came at Morristown in 1998 (Class A), Indian Creek in 2000 (Class 2A) and Rushville in 2008 (Class 3A).

Carmony led Morristown to its lone regional crown in program history in 1998, which was Carmony’s best year as a head coach. The Yellow Jackets posted a 22-2 record that season.

Niece says he has already received several applications for the coaching vacancy. He also stated he is still accepting resumes for the Hornets’ coaching job.

Carmony did not return a phone message by press time on Friday night.
