HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Mattingly named National Football Foundation scholar athlete

CLARKSVILLE — Providence senior Owen Mattingly has been awarded the 2014 Scholar-Athlete Award by the Southern Indiana chapter of the National Football Foundation. The award recognizes Mattingly’s outstanding efforts on the football field and his outstanding achievement in the classroom, school leadership and community service.

In addition to the award, Owen received a $500 college scholarship from the NFF.

Mattingly was nominated by Providence head football coach Larry Denison and was selected by a committee of the Southern Indiana chapter of the NFF. He wa one of eight high school football players honored at the Southern Indiana Chapter of the National Football Foundation/College Hall of Fame 2014 Scholar-Athlete Banquet on Sunday.

President of the Southern Indiana chapter of the NFF said, Mattingly “was selected based on his excellence on the football field and in the classroom, as well as his leadership in school and in the community.”

The selection committee will also nominate one candidate from the eight award winners to be a finalist for national consideration in the NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete Award. The national committee will select five winners, one from each region of the country. Each of the five recipients will be honored in December during the NFF Chapter Awards Luncheon in New York City.

Earlier this school year, Mattingly was selected to the Indiana Football Coaches Association Region 10 All-Star team and was  named Academic All-State. He also was named a Commended Student by the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. He has signed a letter of intent to play football as a preferred walk-on at Indiana University.
